SAMUEL JOHNSON, DREW GILPIN FAUST–BIRTHDAYS SEPTEMBER 18. 2023–PLUS JIMI HENDRIX, CHARLOTTE BRONTE, MAHATMA GANDHI.

                 TODAY IS NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY!

WHEN YOU ARE ONE with the sense of presence, then whatever is necessary by way of spiritual knowledge will sprout by itself.

TODAY I LEARNED about a term called a “glimmer.” Which is the opposite of a trigger. Glimmers are those moments in your day that make you feel joy, happiness, peace, or gratitude. Once you train your brain to be on the lookout for glimmers, these tiny moments will appear more and more.  unknown

THE WRITER who possesses the creative gift owns something of which he is not always master — something that at times strangely wills and works for itself.  CHARLOTTE BRONTE

HAPPINESS is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.                     MAHATMA GANDHI

WHEN THE POWER OF LOVE OVERCOMES THE THE LOVE OF POWER THE WORLD WILL KNOW PEACE.  JIMI HENDRIX

SAMUEL JOHNSON 1709-1784.      wrote first Dictionary.

YOU CAN NEVER BE WISE UNLESS YOU LOVE READING.

CURIOSITY is one of the most permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.

PATRIOTISM IS THE LAST REFUGE OF THE SCOUNDREL.

LANGUAGE is the dress of thought; every time you talk your mind is on parade.

THERE are two types of knowledge. One is knowing a thing. The other is knowing where to find it.

WHAT WE HOPE ever to do with ease, we must learn first to do with diligence.

HE that wishes to see his country robbed of its rights cannot be a patriot.

IF YOUR DETERMINATION is fixed, I do not counsel you to despair. Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength but perseverance.

TO PRESERVE HEALTH is a moral and religious duty: for health is the basis of all social virtues; and we can be useful no longer than while we are well.

THE FUTURE IS PURCHASED BY THE PRESENT.

KINDNESS IS IN OUR POWER, EVEN WHEN FONDNESS IS NOT.

COURAGE is the greatest of all virtues, because if you haven’t courage, you may not have an opportunity to use any of the others.

IT IS BETTER to suffer wrong than to do it, and happier to be sometimes cheated than not to trust.

A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE is a dangerous thing — it only hastens fools to rush in where angels fear to tread.

WHOEVER thinks of going to bed before twelve o’clock is a scoundrel.

PREJUDICE, not being founded on reason, cannot be removed by argument.

LIFE AFFORDS no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties.

PEOPLE need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.

MY DEAR FRIEND, CLEAR YOUR MIND OF CAN’T.

POWER IS NOT SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE OF TRUTH.

HAPPINESS is not a state to arrive at, but rather a manner of traveling.

ALL INTELLECTUAL IMPROVEMENT ARISES FROM LEISURE.

INTEGRITY without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful.

NOTHING WILL EVER BE ATTEMPTED if all possible objections must first be overcome.

DREW GILPIN FAUST.   1947—-PRESIDENT OF HARVARD

                MORTALITY DEFINES THE HUMAN CONDITION.

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED ANIMALS, AND AS A CHILD, I read a lot of horse books. I had a particular favorite called ‘Silver Snaffles’ that my mother gave away.

OF ALL LIVING THINGS, only humans consciously anticipate death; the consequent need choose how to behave in its face — to worry about how to die — distinguishes us from other animals. The need to manage death is the particular lot of humanity.

SINCE the middle of the twentieth century, our understanding of the American past has been revolutionized, in no small part because of our altered conceptions of the place of race in the nation’s history.

THE SEDUCTIVENESS of war derives in part from its location on this boundary of the human, the inhuman, and the superhuman. It requires us to confront the relationship among the noble, the horrible and the infinite; the animal, the spiritual and the divine.

                                  HAVE FUN AND SMILE . . .
