LUCILLE BALL 1911-1989 “I LOVE LUCY”
I BELIEVE that we’re as happy in life as we make up our minds to be.
LOVE YOURSELF FIRST and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.
ONE OF THE THINGS I LEARNED THE HARD WAY was that it doesn’t pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself.
THE MORE THINGS YOU DO, THE MORE THINGS YOU CAN DO.
IN LIFE, all good things come hard, but wisdom is the hardest to come by.
RESPONSIBILITY is the ability to respond.
WHETHER WE’RE PREPARED OR NOT, life has a habit of thrusting situations upon us.
I’M HAPPY THAT I HAVE BROUGHT LAUGHTER because I have been shown by many the value of it in so many lives, in so many ways.
PEOPLE EITHER HAVE COMEDY OR THEY DON’T YOU CAN’T TEACH IT TO THEM.
HOW I LOVE LUCY WAS BORN? WE DECIDED that instead of divorce lawyers profiting from our mistakes, we’d profit from them.
I’M A REAL HAM. I LOVE AN AUDIENCE. I WORK BETTER WITH AN AUDIENCE. I AM DEAD, IN FACT, WITHOUT ONE.
ABILITY IS OF LITTLE ACCOUNT WITHOUT OPPORTUNITY.
CHILDREN internalize their parents’ unhappiness. Fortunately, they absorb our contentment just as readily.
THERE’S A GREAT DEAL OF DIFFERENCE between temperament and temper. Temperament is something you welcome creatively, for ir is based on sensitivity, empathy, awareness . . . but a bad temper takes too much out of you and doesn’t really accomplish anything.
IT’S A HELLUVA START, being able to recognize what makes you happy.
SOME OF THE MOST GIFTED PEOPLE I’ve ever met or read about are homosexual. How can you knock it?
WHEN YOU’RE TOO MAD and too rattled to see straight, you’re bound to make mistakes. you can go on and on for years being miserable about a situation and not have it change you. You get so you can’t stand yourself.
WHEN LIFE SEEMED UNBEARABLE, I learned to live in my imagination, and to step inside other people’s skins–indispensable abilities for an actress.
TELEVISION IS THE QUICKEST FORM OF RECOGNITION IN THE WORLD.
I NEVER THOUGHT I WAS FUNNY. I DON’T THINK FUNNY.
MY IDEA OF WOMANHOOD has always been the pioneer woman who fought and worked at her husband’s side. she bore the children, kept the home fires burning; she was the hub of the family, the planner and the dreamer.
I REGRET THE PASSING OF THE STUDIO SYSTEM. I was very appreciative of it because I had no talent.
I AM NOT FUNNY. The writers were funny. My directors were funny. The situations were funny . . . What I am is brave. I have never been scared. Not when I did movies, certainly not when I was a model and not when I did I Love Lucy.
HERE’S WHAT I ADVISE ANY YOUNG STRUGGLING ACTRESS TODAY: the important thing is to develop as a woman first, and a performer second. you wouldn’t prostitute yourself to get a part, not if you’re in the right mind. You wouldn’t be happy, whatever you do, unless you’re comfortable with your own conscience.
ANDY WARHOL 1928-1987. VISUAL ARTIST
ART IS WHAT YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH.
THERE IS BEAUTY IN EVERYTHING, JUST NOT EVERYBODY SEES IT.
THE IDEA IS NOT TO LIVE FOREVER, it is to create something that will.
PERCEPTION PRECEDES REALITY.
WHEN YOU STOP WANTING SOMETHING, YOU GET IT.
LOOK POOR, THINK RICH.
I THINK AN ARTIST is anybody who does something well, like if you cook well.
FANTASY LOVE IS MUCH BETTER THAN REALITY LOVE.
YOU HAVE TO DO STUFF THAT AVERAGE PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND because those are the only good things.
PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS SO BORING WHEN THEY BAND TOGETHER. You have to be alone to develop all the idiosyncrasies that make a person interesting.
ISN’T LIFE A SERIES OF IMAGES THAT CHANGE AS THEY REPEAT THEMSELVES?
IT’S NOT WHAT YOU ARE THAT COUNTS, IT’S WHAT THRY THINK YOU ARE.
SOMETIMES PEOPLE let the same problem make them miserable for years when they could just say, So what. that’s one of my favorite things to say. So what.
MOST PEOPLE N AMERICA THINK ART IS A MAN’S NAME.
EVERYTHING will be art and nothing will be art, because everything, as I believe, already is.
I LEARNED that you actually have more epode when you shut up.
I SMOKE POT BECAUSE I WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN BEFORE I DIE.
KISS ME WITH YOUR EYES.
I DON’T WANT TO BE SMART, BECAUSE BEING SMART MAKES YOU DEPRESSED.
NICOLAS MALEBRANCHE 1638-1715 PHILOSPHER
WE ARE MADE TO KNOW AND LOVE GOD.
JUST AS OUR EYES NEED LIGHT in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to create.
I LOVE GOOD AND PLEASURE, I hate evil and pain, I want to be happy and I am not mistaken in believing, that people, angels and even demons have those same inclinations.
ATTENTIVENESS IS THE NATURAL PRAYER OF THE SOUL.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHATEVER OF MY SOUL.
I AM NOT MY OWN LIGHT UNTO MYSELF.
WHEN I TOUCH A HUMAN HAND, I TOUCH HEAVEN.
IMAGINATION IS THE MAD BOARDER.
WE CAN ALWAYS make ourselves liked provided we act likable, but we cannot always make ourselves esteemed, no matter what our merits are.
BE BRAVE, LIKE LUCILLE!
